I’ve been home less than 24 hours now after traveling the world for six months. Stepping back into my old life after such an experience is exciting, refreshing, and humbling.
So far the greatest experience was putting my apartment back in order. I was lucky enough to have rented it out while I was away to an awesome renter. As I was dragging boxes up from my cellar space and placing my clothes back in my closet I thought, What beautiful things I have! The wool and cashmere sweaters, the nicely taylored skirts, and the silky tops were all soft to the touch.
During my world trip I wore really cheap clothes that was only cotton for many reasons. Don’t wear expensive looking stuff in a poor country, you are being insensitive to those around you, and you look like a good person to rob. Also local laundry services don’t know how to treat your clothes properly and have a chance of destroying your stuff. So after wearing clothes that had been stretched out and hung limply from my frame, I realized how lucky my life was because I could afford to have beautiful clothes. I’m not taking about brand names, just good quality.
Another thing I am really enjoying is the quiet of my city. Yesterday I was walking on one of the busiest streets in Vienna and I laughed. I turned to my husband P and said, “The loudest roar of the cars here is nothing in comparison to the noise of a normal street in India.”
These simple things are making me realize how very wonderful my life is. I have money to afford nice things. I live in the best city in the world according to Mercer’s List. Yes there are a lot of people out there with a lot more than I have, but who cares.
